UK VAT return: supporting documents
Sales and purchase backing, EC acquisitions, flat rate scheme evidence, and scheme-change notes for a VAT quarter review.
What this template is for
A VAT return review needs traceability: sales and purchase totals, exempt/zero-rated lines, and scheme elections. This request mirrors what many practices collect before submitting or reviewing a client’s MTD return.
When to use it
- Quarterly or monthly VAT cycles.
- First return after registration or scheme change.
- When HMRC has raised questions and you need a tidy evidence pack.
Tips
- Ask for digital links to bookkeeping reports when possible (QBO/Xero VAT detail).
- If the client is flat rate, include the sector and first/last day of the period in your cover note.
